Hawaiian Telcom’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing was again in the news today. In my opinion, this all could’ve been avoided if the Hawaii PUC and the Division of Consumer Advocacy didn’t sign off on this purchase by the Carlyle Group in 2005.But unfortunately they did. Thus the Carlyle Group ran this venerable longtime Kama’aina company into the ground.
On a related note, Burt Lum a former employee of GTE Hawaiian Tel and Hawaiian Telcom made some very interesting comments about Hawaiian Telcom. Which echoed what I blogged yesterday why Hawaiian Telcom is in this predicament.
WHT had an article today that went into greater detail about HELCO’s electricity rates than what the Hawaii PUC emailed me yesterday.
I find it hard to believe that Hawaii has the 2nd slowest Internet speeds in the nation (here is the link to the PC World article). But maybe it is indeed accurate after I saw this other speed survey done by the Communication Workers Of America.
There was an interesting op-ed in Hawaii Reporter about the fallout from the 1993 apology resolution.Which apologized to Native Hawaiians for overthrowing the Hawaiian Kingdom in 1893.Native Hawaiian groups like OHA have used this apology resolution as a basis make claims on the former Hawaiian Kingdom crown lands conveyed to the State of Hawaii at statehood in 1959.
Lastly, I stumbled on Charles Flaherty’s rebuttal to Andrew Walden’s article titled “Hokulia Settlement Exposed.” It certainly goes to show Hawaii Free Press is certainly a good resource for all our bird-cage bottoms and for landscaping mulch
