I finally received a response from the Hawaii PUC in regards to this person’s question asking why HELCO’s electricity rates remain so high despite the drop in oil prices.
The Hawaii PUC sent me this FAQ explaining the high utility rates. In a nutshell,HELCO has a 60 day supply of oil. Thus if there is any price increase/decrease during that time there is a lag in any price adjustments.
It was a timely response. Especially since the Honolulu Advertiser had an article on this issue today.
HELCO is certainly lucky to have the PUC doing PR work on its behalf!
