The 6(5) phase of the Saddle Road improvement project was awarded to Goodfellow Brothers on October 24,2008.This project will entail paving the newly re-aligned roadway between m.m 35-m.m 41.5. Which will traverse behind the PTA barracks.
On related note, the HTH published this article a few months ago stating this phase would be delayed for two years. It was based on this request by the CFLHD to extend their conservation district use permit between m.m 28 and m.m 42 until September 2010.I tried to talk to the reporter, Jason Armstrong, about his inaccurate article at that time. But he would not listen to my concerns. Hopefully the HTH will publish a follow up article on this.
I received this update in regards to the Queen Kaahumanu Highway Phase I widening project :
“Palani Road work continues and within intersection night work scheduled for 11.18 thru 11.20 from 7pm to 5am next day. Plans shows only right turns allowed at Palani intersection for night work. Palani to Henry work to start this week and soon work to start at Henry where additional left-turn lanes will be made, widening more on the makai side. Malulani intersection, widening more makai side will be the last work area for the contractor. As of the last construction schedule submitted – contractor’s schedule shows project to be completed late January 2009 or in February 2009???”
As far as the BAFO bidding process for Phase II, the three bids from Hawaiian Dredging,Kiewit Pacific Company, and Goodfellow Brothers were received by the HDOT on October 31, 2008. There will be a bid evaluation committee meeting on November 14th, 2008 to go over these bids. If everything goes well the HDOT should be sending a intent to award letter to winning contractor during the first week of December.
There was a meeting up in Kawaihae where discussed the status of Hawaii SuperFerry’s service to the Big Island. It still seems unclear when, if ever, the Hawaii SuperFerry will be servicing the Big Island. Which is really unfortunate. I don’t understand why they can’t use their current ferry to service both Maui and the Big Island.
Lastly, Circuity City filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Monday morning. This filing has slammed the door shut on any chance they’ll open their unfinished store at Kona Commons.Hopefully the developer of Kona Commons is actively looking for a replacement tenant like Best Buy or Fry’s Electronics.
