Its good to see that West Hawaii Today and the Hawaii Tribune Herald have backed away from having to login to see the recent news articles. It seems that if you want to post comments or view older articles is the only aspects that you have to login for.
I wonder why this letter writer has a big ax to grind against Kamakoa affordable housing project in Waikoloa. Maybe its because he feels the new homes will decrease the value of his home or he views the project as discriminatory.
Lastly, this WHT article about Hilo Medical Center not resorting to layoffs like Kona Community Hospital just did pretty much confirmed my suspicions. It seems the management of HMC is perfectly willing to stick their head in the sand and ignore this looming fiscal crisis.

According to the article, Hilo Medical Center is saving $21 million through no overtime, putting off maintenance, and so on, while KCH is only saving $2 million through 54 layoffs (and has supposedly already taken the steps HMC is using). It seems pretty improbable, but I’m not ready to conclude that KCH is being responsible (as opposed to panicking). Props to WHT, though, they’ve already followed up with more investigation than usual, though the story needs more.
