What is up with our local hospitals ? First the Kona Community Hospital revealed that they are having financial problems and may have to layoff employees. Now I just read that North Hawaii Community Hospital is also having financial problems and will have to layoff employees.
I breathed a sigh of relief when Matson announced an agreement three unions averting a potentially crippling strike. But it seems we are not out of the woods yet. Apparently the West Coast longshoreman’s contract expired on Tuesday. Thus setting the stage for another very crippling strike.Hopefully both of the parties can reach an agreement without having to resort to dropping a atomic bomb on Hawaii’s economy.
I found some interesting additional perspective on SB2646 (here, and here). It is an interesting discussion.Environmentalists claim it is simply a Trojan horse legislation.Which will allow more agricultural land to get developed. Developers counter asserting this will actually help agriculture in this state…the beat goes on…
Lastly, I got this e-mail from Councilwoman Brenda Ford thanking me for my testimony in support of the 114 million dollar bond float.
“Aloha Aaron,
I wanted to personally thank you for your testimony. Fortunately, the council passed the bond for $114.58M. I also worked with the Finance Department to waive the normal 5-day holding period in the County Clerk’s office so the Mayor would sign the bill immediately and DPW would award the construction contract before July 12. The council also agreed to waive the holding period. The bond is finally done thanks to the many people who testified and wrote to the councilmembers.”
